Fan frenzy By Inside Track Wednesday, December 17, 2008 - Updated 8d 3h ago .- Christmas came early for dozens of starry-eyed New Kids on the Block fans, who were gifted with some face time with Donnie Wahlberg and Jordan Knight on the Charlestown set of Donnie’s TNT pilot “Bunker Hill.”Jordan, who visited his bud’s Main Street shoot the other day, snapped photos with giggling gals and signed a ton of autographs. As for Donnie, he gave the female fans props for driving across the Tobin Bridge three dozen times the other morning to watch him film! “You girls are freakin’ crazy! But it’s a good kind of crazy,” the Dorchester homey yelled to his fans. Yesterday, the cameras were due to move to the Lynn Item, which is doubling as a police station for the show.

The Boston Herald's Inside Track.- It was lights, camera, Donnie at the Union Oyster House yesterday, where New Kid on the Block Donnie Wahlberg started shooting the set-in-Boston TNT pilot, “Bunker Hill.” “Filming is going good,” Donnie told the Track outside the famed Haymarket Square eatery. In the show, the Dorchester homey plays against type as a Charlestown Townie who returns to his ’hood to police the streets where he grew up. Click here to find out more! Bridget Moynahan, better known in these parts as Tom Brady [stats]’s baby mama, was cast as Donnie’s sister-in-law, but she wasn’t on the set yesterday. Also MIA was Brian Dennehy, who plays a former mob-boss-turned-florist-shop-owner. TNT didn’t want to discuss the pilot because it hasn’t been picked up yet. But word from set insiders is that the script bears more than a passing resemblance to the Charles Stuart case that rocked Boston nearly two decades ago.Stuart, the yuppie manager of then-prestigious Kakas Furs, shot and killed his pregnant wife, Carol, and blamed the crime on a black robber. Later, Stuart killed himself by jumping off the Tobin Bridge . Yesterday’s scene had Donnie interrogating a Townie waitress, played by Maria Thayer, inside the historic eatery. Director Jon Avnet called “Roll ’em,” while more than 100 extras dined on hot dogs and burgers while Donnie did his thing. Restaurant owner Joe Milano said the TV types chose his restaurant for its “Boston cop feeling.” The production moves to a Chelsea soundstage today.

The New Kid nuzzled a young redhead and then joined a few friends for a game of darts. Welcome to "Bunker Hill," the TNT pilot that began filming yesterday inside the historic Union Oyster House. Owner Joe Milano said the cast and crew pulled up at his place at 5 a.m., and went right to work. "It's kind of like a carnival," whispered Milano, watching Wahlberg and Maria Thayer tape the bar scene. "Bunker Hill," which is being produced and directed by Jon Avnet, is about a Charlestown cop, played by Wahlberg, who returns to Boston to serve and protect his peeps. He costars with Brian Dennehy and actress Bridget Moynahan, better known as Tom Brady's girlfriend before Gisele Bundchen. (Bridget wasn't in the scenes shot yesterday.) In addition to the Oyster House, the pilot's being shot in Charlestown, Chelsea, and at the Tobin Bridge. Avnet, who worked with Wahlberg on "Righteous Kill" and "Boomtown," told us he isn't bothered at all by Boston's frigid weather. "These wimps from LA," the Brooklyn-bred director said, motioning to others in the room. "I like to watch them shrivel up in the cold." Also on set yesterday was Walon Green, the screenwriter whose credits include "Hill Street Blues," "Law & Order," and "NYPD Blue."

New Kids on the Block singer Joey McIntyre, 35, brought son Griffin Thomas, 13 months, along for a shopping trip at The Grove in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The father-son duo were looking for holiday gifts -- hopefully Griffin's been nice this year! Griffin is the first child for Joey and wife Barrett McIntyre, who married in 2003.

The Light Group announced today that 39-year-old former teen idols Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood will welcome 2009 at Jet nightclub. The two will later rejoin bandmates Joey McIntyre, Jordan Knight and Jonathan Knight on their tour later in the month. The last scheduled NKOTB performance in 2008 will be in Monterrey, Mexico, on Dec. 4. The tour will resume in Manchester, England, on Jan. 16. In addition to the appearance of Wahlberg and Wood, organizers said New Kids fans at Jet on New Year’s will be treated to “a special NKOTB-edition video set by acclaimed DVDJ Roonie G.” Admission to the New Kids New Year’s bash is $150 per person, including a hosted bar from 10 p.m. to midnight. Table reservations are also available, with a two-bottle minimum per table. Prices start at $800 and include a “complimentary” bottle of White Star champagne.

First time helmer Brian Goodman had a tremendous amount of input while shooting "What Doesn't Kill You," which screened at the ArcLight on Wednesday as part of the Variety Screening Series. Not only did Goodman write and direct the Boston crime saga, but the lead role of Brian (played by Mark Ruffalo) is based on his real life. "It's strange sitting here in front of an audience after all of this,” admits the director.Goodman, who was jailed for grand theft during the late '80s, has seen it all: Drug-addiction, poverty, severed family ties and a near-fatal shooting which left him with a small caliber bullet lodged in the back of his head. “I think 85% of us walking the earth have a movie in their mind. I certainly don't think I lived the life of Mandela or anything, but still, it was a good story."
“What Doesn’t Kill You” tells the tale of two friends (Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke) growing up on the mean streets of south Boston in the '70s and '80s. Goodman said he started writing the movie out of pure boredom while incarcerated. “There was a lot of paper involved. Anyhow, once I got out (of prison), I had my sister type up all of the notes for me. I still don’t use typewriters to this day.”
After meeting Donnie Wahlberg at a high-stakes poker game and presenting him with the script, Goodman and Wahlberg it it off, exchanging phone calls and ideas until eventually finding the right financier in the Bob Yari Group. Wahlberg, who is credited with co-writing the drama, also acts in the pic as well. “I’ve been sober now for 14 years,” says Goodman. Asked how he manages to do so, especially in Hollywood, Goodman replies, "Golf. A lot of golf.”

Old Memories for New Kid Danny Wood / Posted by Jessica Camerato.- Before Danny Wood got hooked up with courtside seats by Donnie Wahlberg to watch the Boston Celtics ring ceremony, the New Kids on the Block member took in a world championship from a different view.
“During the ring ceremony I was definitely getting chills because I was actually in the building in ‘86 when they won number 16,” Wood said. “I was a junior in high school at Copley High and I was in the building when they won. I mean I was way up in the rafters. So for me it’s really special to be here to see them raise that after all these years.” Watching the banner get hoisted to the rafters took Wood back to the days of the original Big Three.
“I started thinking about Larry Bird and Kevin McHale and all the guys that last time they won were here,” he said. “And then I started thinking like my sons are big Celtics fans so this is their generation for them.” The native Bostonian added, “It’s just great for the city of Boston, for the organization, for them to be doing this again.”
Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block got culture and food while here for Tuesday's show. He, his wife, Barrett , and year-old son, Griffin , visited the National Constitution Center. Since it was Election Day, the family took part in the center's "kids' voting" promo and posed little Griffin for a "baby's first vote" photo. After the show, the McIntyres and another couple requested a private table at Tinto, the Spanish joint near Rittenhouse Square.
Kids will be kids .- New Kids on the Block are older, but maybe not more mature. Word from the road is that Donnie Wahlber g and Danny Wood have installed a stripper pole in their tour bus. A rep for the band confirmed to the New York Post that the Carmen Electra stripper pole was given to the dynamic duo, complete with instructions, as a gift from their publicists. Unlike their bandmates, Wahlberg and Wood are single at the moment.

New Kids on the Block delivered a big reunion valentine to Long Island last night at Nassau Coliseum , taking time out of introducing their new material to fans from back in the day and introducing themselves to the new fans they have won over in the past 14 years since their last tour. "You don't know how good it feels to be in this building tonight," said Donnie Wahlberg . "Long Island has always been a special place for us." As the group rolled through their comeback hit "Summertime, " Joey McIntyre yelled, " Jones Beach , 1988!" a nod to a major show in their heyday. For two hours, the New Kids mixed the old and the new, with songs from "The Block" faring just as well, if not better, than most of their classic material. " Dirty Dancing ," delivered from a small stage in the center of the floor, worked well, as did the groovy "2 in the Morning" and the electro-tinged "Twisted." Adding " We Will Rock You " to "Hangin' Tough" seemed a little unnecessary (though not as clumsy as Celine Dion 's version earlier this month) and one of the ballads " If You Go Away " or "Baby I Believe in You" could easily have been cut, but for the most part, the show was tight and as well-choreographed as their new dance steps .

Building Block: Author Rose tells story of New Kids’ ‘Rise’ Jed Gottlieb By Jed Gottlieb Wednesday, September 24, 2008 .- Great boy bands come with great svengalis. The Backstreet Boys and ’N Sync had swindler Lou Pearlman; the Jackson 5 had father/taskmaster Joe Jackson; and New Edition and New Kids on the Block had Maurice Starr, a Roxbury-based musical genius and entrepreneur. Starr invented the modern boy band in the mid-’80s, when he applied his New Edition r & b formula to five white teens from Boston. Starr was the man behind New Kids - who return as grown men to play the TD Banknorth Garden Friday and on Sunday - but Tony Rose was the man behind Starr. OK, not quite behind, but next to. Rose secured Starr’s first major label record deal and later recorded early New Kids material at his Boston studio. Both Rose and Starr parted ways with the New Kids before the group disbanded in 1994.
Retired from the music business, Rose is now an Arizona-based publisher and author. He spoke with the Herald about his new book, “Before the Legend: The Rise of New Kids on the Block and . . . a Guy Named Maurice Starr.” Herald: Obviously the book capitalizes on the New Kids reunion, but it’s clear from what you write that you really wanted to tell Starr’s back story. Rose: Yes, it’s in the moment. But it’s also a history of the black Boston music scene that came out of Roxbury. New Edition, Maurice, all of us. It was a great time. A lot of girls, a lot of money going around, a lot of records were being made.
When did Maurice realize he could create a white New Edition? New Edition was basically a younger version of (Starr’s) first band with his brothers. He always wanted to replicate what the Jackson 5 had. And he did in New Edition. (Sings) “Candy Girl.” “A-B-C.” You hear that similarity? (laughs) With the New Kids his template was more the Osmonds, with Joey (McIntyre) being his Donny.
Were there any problems with Maurice crossing the racial divide from black r & b to white pop? In 1988 or ’89, Maurice and I were standing on Lansdowne Street outside a club and Gov. Dukakis showed up and almost knocked Maurice down. He and his staff were trying to get through to meet the New Kids. Maurice was right there, ready to shake his hand, but nobody knew it was Maurice behind the band. It just couldn’t be this guy. Before anybody had a chance to make a negative noise about black and white issues, it was already done. The records were selling, the video was on MTV and the band was about to be big all over the world.
Do you see Maurice’s influence in the reunited, now grownup New Kids? Sure. When you go to the Maurice Starr school of music you learn how to sing and dance and be a gentleman. It’s “Yes, sir. Donnie Wahlberg : What hasn't changed? On a personal level, I think we've all developed a work ethic while we were away. When we were a group before, there were five of us, so there was always someone to lean on. When you go off on your own, it's just you. Whether it's Jon sellling condos or Jordan doing a solo album and performing onstage. When you're alone, if you fail when it's just you, you fail. I think our individual work ethics have improved tremendously.
Jordan Knight : A lot of people when they interview us, they think we stopped when the New Kids stopped. Maybe none of us achieved the frenzy that the New Kids created but that doesn't mean that we weren't out there learning and growing. I think each of us had our best growth while we were all away. We're each bringing that growth to the table so the group is that much stronger today than it was back in the day.
What should fans expect at the show? Jonathan Knight : They should be prepared to get it all – it's going to be an eargasm, eyegasm, orgasm, you name it. It's exciting. We're really pulling out all the stops and we've done a good job mixing the old with new, the fast with slow. The decades of influences we have to draw on. We can go all the way back to Frank Sinatra and Al Jolson , the Motown sound and Philly soul and even the sounds. And we can even incorporate today. We can borrow stuff from Chris Brown and incorporate it with stuff we borrowed from The Osmonds . We have years and years of experience that we can draw on. We'll mix it up. Sometimes we'll spice them up a little bit, but we don't want to make it too different. To really change it would be a downer for them.

In natty black suits and sneakers, Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, and Danny Wood - now in their mid-30s - trotted out a nimble facsimile of the old-school footwork set to a button-pushing medley of "Step By Step"; "Hangin' Tough"; "Please Don't Go Girl"; and "You Got It (The Right Stuff)." Five female dancers in Celtics jerseys paid tribute to the home team's win Sunday night (Wahlberg and Wood were late getting from the game to the venue, causing a reshuffling of set times). Heartfelt shout-outs to the hometown crowd were greeted with comparably enthusiastic spasms of shrieking, which didn't wane a decibel during the New Kids' sweet-natured new single, "Summertime," and "Tonight," a goofy paean from the group's second album to the good old days of their first album. The sound was so poor throughout the concert that it's nearly impossible to comment on what the New Kids sound like all these years later; ticket-holders for NKOTB's two sold-out Boston Garden shows in September will find out. May 16, 2008 4:46 PMAside from the free Dunkin Donuts we get every other Friday, one of the major perks of working at Rolling Stone is eating lunch with celebs. Every couple of weeks, someone famous — be it Snoop Dogg, Conan O’Brien or William Shatner — drops by our cozy boardroom to chow down and chat about whatever new project they’re working on. Depending on the guest of honor, these noontime affairs are either attended by lots of ad people and RS editors, or lots ad people and a few RS editors in search of a free sandwich. Either way, they're pretty predictable: there's always a Q&A session, polite laughter at the guests' jokes, and enough chicken-caeser wraps to go around. Yesterday's lunch was different: cameras were flashing, bodyguards were flexing, estrogen was pumping — and all the wraps got eaten. The New Kids on the Block were in the house.
The NKs — who are in their mid- to late thirties and thus not so N anymore — popped in to promote their reunion, which includes a U.S. tour kicking off tomorrow in New Jersey and a new album due out this fall. It's been fifteen years since NKOTB was on anyone's pop-culture radar, but that mattered not to the masses of screaming women in the room, who whooped, batted their eyelashes, and elbowed each other out of the way to catch a glimpse of the fivesome as they entered the room. I'm ashamed to admit that my heart, too, was a-flutter. If I hadn't been so busy fanning myself and craning my neck to see Jordan Knight, my first crush [ed. note: he hasn't changed much since 1990, when his face graced my pillowcase], I would've witnessed the fascinating phenomena of grown women completely reverting back to their adolescent selves. When the room finally quieted down (save for periodically uttered sighs), the New Kids spoke. What they said, I couldn't tell you — some business about the reunion, probably. I was too busy staring into Jordan’s big, brown eyes.

The trek is now scheduled to launch Sept. 19 in Toronto and visit about 35 cities across the US and into Canada through late November. The first round of arena shows went on sale earlier this month, and sellouts have already been logged in Toronto; Atlantic City, NJ; Uncasville, CT; and Rosemont, IL, according to the New Kids website. Second nights were added in most of those markets. An updated itinerary is listed below. The boy band, whose members are now pushing 40, gave screaming fans a taste of what's to come last week when they performed together publicly for the first time in 15 years on NBC-TV's "Today" show. They followed that with a couple of radio festivals on the East Coast. Last month, the bandmates--Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight and Danny Wood--appeared on the "Today" show to announce they were back together and working on a new album, which is due this fall. Their first new single, "Summertime," is currently available at digital outlets and is streaming at NKOTB's MySpace page.Concert-goers who purchase a ticket/album bundle will get the "Summertime" MP3 immediately, and their downloads will come with an additional audio program, "The Making of the Album," which includes interviews with the New Kids. "Introducing Griffin Thomas McIntyre .- Although we had gotten a small peek, NKOTB and Dancing With the Stars alum Joey McIntyre officially introduces his son Griffin Thomas, 7 weeks, in this week's issue of People. After welcoming their son on November 20th, Joey, 35, and Barrett, 29, have become 'a great team.' Joey spends the morning playing with Griffin so that his wife can enjoy her eggs and coffee in peace. He also tidies the house -- 'I like clearing away the clutter' -- grocery shops, and picks up more onesies for his son, who is 'already growing out of clothes.' Barrett loves his helpfulness, saying,
He's the most loving dad, and short of breastfeeding, he does it all. That doesn't mean it's all work and no play for Joey though -- each morning, the family of three plops down on the couch for a little TV time. [We watch 'The View'.] We get our Whoopi fill. Being the son of a singer is something Griffin is apparently already aware he is. He coos and stuff but he hums a lot! He did it, like, two hours straight one day. It was cute, but then it was like, 'Is this normal?'
As for daddy tricks, Joey employs two -- warm-up scales and massage. [I sing him warm-up scales.] It definitely calms him down. [Also,] he likes his hands to be massaged, which is very like me. [After his bath,] my thumb is massaging the palm of his hand, and he totally chills out. All in all, Joey has a positive review of fatherhood and his son thus far. Every day I get to experience with him is a joy".
